PERSONAL BRANDING DEMYSTIFIED

 

Remember LiveJournal? Pre-Facebook, Live Journal was the most innovative platform in the world. I can remember being in high school and that was the latest trend. People would hit me up via AIM and tell me that their LiveJournal was live.

For me this was epic, because I was allowed to read people's thoughts online. Not only was it a way to get people voices heard. I also formed a strong love affair with James Plegar’s words... I digress…

Live Journal allowed people to effectively, and not so effectively communicate who they were, their beliefs, and dreams. We were also able to see personality traits shine through their journal entries. We uncovered individual's passion, drive, and encouragement.

Live Journal was incredibly helpful for introverts. Susan Cain, author of Quiet said that “Introverts, in contrast, may have strong social skills and enjoy parties and business meetings, but after a while wish they were home in their pajamas.”

Live Journal was the start of personal branding.

Personal Branding is an authentic way to leverage your skills, creativity, and influence the right kind of people. Personal Branding separates you from the pack professionally and helps people/companies identify your personal mission in life. Personal Branding is a form of social expression. There are 234 social media sites that we gravitate to. Every time we click on a media sites we are creating a virtual signal to the world that we want our voices to be heard 😲. Personal Branding demonstrates a structured blueprint to authentically streamline our thoughts and communicate our core values.

MY JT Foxx Experience Case Study

The other day, I had the opportunity to chat with JT Foxx, He created his brand as the #1 Wealth Coach. He has become an international sensation in the UK and South Africa. 

He created his brand using his personality to leverage his audience. He discovered that his ideal market was to sell internationally versus selling in the states. Foxx used his personality as a tool to create his community. 
 


PERSONAL BRANDING IN 2017 ( THIS IS SOME 💰MONEY STUFF )

Before we dive into the nuts and bolts of personal branding we want to be honest with you. This is the best time to rev up your personal brand. We think you are amazing. But we want to be honest with you. 

REMEMBER THE FINANCIAL CRASH OF 2008? 

It was miserable. Student loans were on hold. Tons of families lost their homes and at the time most families were trying to stay afloat. 

Here's what we know about economic recessions. Roughly, for the past hundred years, we've had an economic crisis for every seven to ten years. This economic crisis is what they call a bear market. When there is a bear market things are pretty. People start to freak out and take their money out of the stock market. Things are pretty. If you look at the recession portion you'll notice that the Trough is where things are bear.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?  

Because when people take their money out of the stock market our jobs are at stake. During recessions we break down and have huge identity crisis. When we have an identity crisis we are faced with a challenge. An identity crisis may occur at any time in your adult years when you are faced with a challenge to your sense of self. Your personal worth comes into question. Here's the upside:

I WAS IN THE SAME BOAT AS YOU. :) ( third person aside)

During the 2008 recession, I was the one waiting in line every day to see if my financial aid check came in. Fast forward to 2012, I had not just one job, but three! I was so focused on my jobs, goals, and ideas, that I was trapped in the jobs mission and not my OWN mission.

If you're in limbo I get it. I've had a crisis and felt incredibly stuck. I was working on everyone else's dream and I forgot to see my own. 

Before The Quarter Design became a company, I experimented with my personal brand and I spent a lot of time and money trying to find the right thing in my life. Networking up the Yin-Yang and I was still overworked, overwhelmed, and over extended. 

It wasn't until I created my own personal brand and started experimenting with time saving strategies that I was able to build a company around helping people communicate their idea. 

TRUST ME AND BELIEVE IT TOOK SOME HARD WORK… I had a lot of Top Ramen moments ( I REALLY WANT TO BE TRANSPARENT😊)

The results were staggering!! 

After focusing on my personal brand I was able to triple my income, negotiate my salary, and I got hired on the spot, without even applying for jobs. 

WHY DO I SAY THIS?

Because rich or poor, college student or CEO, you should have the opportunity to create visibility, scale your influence, be yourself in and out of work, and impact a lot of people. There are billions of us on this earth and you are unique.

STEPS TO A PERSONAL BRAND

 

1.TAKE YOUR PERSONAL BRAND AUDIT

Ask Yourself... If you could boil down who you are in twenty words what would they be? Are you sporty, or considerate? Really think about it. 

 

TAKE MIKI FOR EXAMPLE

Like You, Miki has an amazing story to tell. Born an adventurer. She is always on the go. Between learning French and speaking Japenese to her mother, she has a lot of great qualities about her. When we audit Miki's Personal brand we realized that she had three really important traits about her. 

IMPORTANT TRAITS TO SHARE

  1. GIVER

  2. ORGANIZER

  3. CHARISMATIC

Those are her Core Values. She has a heart of an adventurer, but she is well organized. Which is why she is a project manager.
 

2. BECOME A JOURNALIST AND INTERVIEW YOURSELF

Here's the thing we all like stories. Young or old, we are captivated by people's personal stories. We want to know yours. Why did you become an accountant? Why do you wear shorts even in the summer?

3. Rocking chair method

 

Imagine yourself as 90 years old and a young person asked you for advice. What would you say to that individual? What were some of the challenges that you faced? How did you overcome that experience?

 

This is your time to really think and create a personal blueprint of how you got out of the situation.

 

Chances are you create a plot line for your future. That’s the fun part.

4. Personality Map

What do you do when you are stressed? Happy? Do you punch a wall? Do you organize a strike?What are your specific traits? Are you an ESFP? Ambivert? Enneagram 1?

Take some personality test to really find out your personal brand is on a holistic level.  

Chances are your core values fall in the same.

When we asked Kathy what her core values were, we uncovered that she had the same core values as Oprah and Demi Lovato. As an ENFJ, Kathy’s Heart centered- personal brand is driven by helping people.
